Fall Planters That Come Back in the Spring!

Fall Planters

Hello friends,

The weather is getting cooler here…the days are shorter….the leaves are changing and many of them have already fallen to the ground. I’ve exchanged my flip flops for booties…my tank tops for sweaters.

Yes, Fall has arrived in Maryland!

I love Fall. It’s one of my absolute favorite times of the year! I love the crisp air and the anticipation of the holidays right around the corner. One of my favorite places to decorate for Fall are porches. Last year, I loved placing pretty Fall touches around our Airbnb porches. (You can read the blog about Fall porches here.)

Before winter arrives, I have been wanting to place some new Fall planters onto the porch at our Bungalow Airbnb. I asked my friend, April (her IG handle is: April.fourfeet) who is a landscape architect to help me choose plants that would come back in the Spring because I love the thought of having color on this porch as Spring arrives - which will save me money, too!

These are the products you will need to copy the planters that I’ve done:

  1. Container planters

  2. River rock

  3. Top soil or container soil

  4. Tall grass (I used 2 - one for each planter)

  5. Wintergreen (This is a ground cover with red berries) (I used 4 - two for each planter)

  6. Pansies (I used 16 - eight for each planter)

Choose your containers

I found these planters at Lowe’s and I love them because they have a wide top (19”). They also have a modern, concrete look to them and yet they are light-weight. TIP: Make sure you drill 2-3 holes in them…for drainage!

Add River Rock

Add 2-3” of river rock to the bottom of the planter. Again, this helps with drainage.

Add Soil

Cover the rock with 5-6” of soil.

Add Grasses and Wintergreen

Score the bottoms of the plants (at the roots) and break them up so the roots can expand in the container. Then, place the grass in the middle of the container and the wintergreen on either side of the grasses. Fill in with soil.

NOTE: The wonderful thing about wintergreen is that the berries stay red all winter long and in the spring, they produce a white flower for added color.

Tuck Pansies around the sides

Fall Planters

I placed four pansy plants on each side of the container. After you place them where you want them, fill in with soil. Water your plants and enjoy!

Place pumpkins/mums/plants around them for more contrast.

I get so excited looking at these pictures because I know that these plants will come back in the spring so hopefully, I won’t have to do too much to them next year!

Happy Fall, dear friends! Make sure you take some time to sip apple cider and play a few games with your family!

Sending you hugs from afar -
